2:30Ottoman Caliph: What Happened After 1924?
“He embodied all the complexity and contradictions of the late Ottoman experience.”
Maulana Azad cautioned "you are dividing a nation, not just the land."
A leader was born — Jinnah. He gave the slogan of a nation without any vision of how it would be built, how it would run, on what kind of parliament it would stand. Look at the trouble our leadership faced — we did not listen to Maulana Azad. Wasn't Azad saying exactly this — that you are going to divide a community, not divide land, and the community got divided. We said, no sir, Pakistan will be made, it will be made. And Jinnah sahib gave the slogan of Pakistan but never even explained why. The first speech he gave, after going there, in Lahore, he said this would be a secular nation. If it was going to be a secular nation, then why was this partition even carried out? Right there, we dug our own grave. Those of us who stayed back in this country — after that, the only thing we had left was Ambedkar's Constitution, which Nehru fought the 1952 election on, as a mandate, as a referendum, saying we will make this country a secular nation and the Constitution will be our guideline. Now, when people say you should just leave — we say the same thing to them: hold a referendum too. And if in that referendum they want to make this a Hindu Rashtra, go ahead and make it. We won't raise a single voice. But you contested your election on that very Constitution — that is why you are Prime Minister today. And that Constitution tells you that you cannot oppress us.
