2:30Ottoman Caliph: What Happened After 1924?
“He embodied all the complexity and contradictions of the late Ottoman experience.”
"We committed a historic mistake by joining the JP Movement."
I had said to Jayaprakash ji: sir, the Jan Sangh people are moving far ahead alongside you. He said the Jan Sangh people are the ones most upset with me. But they have organisation. That's why I'm with them. Don't worry, that will never happen. And we committed a sin. We joined the JP movement. And the result of joining the JP movement was that small parties kept springing up one after another. And Muslims kept getting pushed to the margins. In this country, a Muslim did become chief minister, in several states. But the marginal position is this: Muslims have ended up with a fixed department of minority affairs. Now we are not in a position where we can say we are stakeholders. Congress, which kept weakening, had many weaknesses of its own. But the benefit of that went to the individual parties that sprang up, and the way those parties divided the vote — and now even the thinking itself has changed. The people who were ready to give their lives for Mamata left her the moment she lost. Now when some of these people come over to this side, they get called secular; the others get called communal. But underneath, when the ideology has been hollowed out, the body appears without a soul. All these leaders you see are walking report cards. There is no soul left inside them. This is what we call the shape India has taken.
