2:30Ottoman Caliph: What Happened After 1924?
“He embodied all the complexity and contradictions of the late Ottoman experience.”
"If they want to bulldoze this university, they will have to pass through our corpses."
If this university is bulldozed — suppose, worst case, it is demolished — what options do you have?
If that happens, they will have to pass through our corpses.
[Couplet: Those whose homes alone were lit, taking with them the happiness of a few — I do not know such a custom that leaves the morning without light.]
When you speak to the vice-chancellor of this university, even he cannot get through what he wants to say without becoming emotional. Speak to the students, and there are tears in their eyes. Speak to the faculty here, and they too are emotional. Parents, too, are anxious about their children's future and their situation — they fear that the bulldozer really will run over this university and it will be snatched from them. Although they also say they have faith — in the country's constitution, in the law, in the courts, and in God — that He will not let them down, and that this university will not be bulldozed. But they also say that if the government has already decided to bulldoze the university, then the bulldozer will have to pass over their corpses.
